The Theory Test
Driving Theory Test
There are two parts to the theory test, both of which must be passed to pass the test overall.
In preparation for the theory test, we recommend you read the latest copy of the highway code, which is available online here.
Part one - Multiple choice test
The theory test consists of 50 questions, which you must complete in 57 minutes. You must answer 43 correctly to pass. You can navigate between questions and flag any that you want to return to later on.
Test your knowledge and find out what the questions will be like using our online Mock Theory Test.
Part two - Hazard perception
The second part of the test consists of 14 short video clips. Each clip will contain at least one hazard. As soon as you see a hazard emerging you need to click the screen.
The earlier you click on seeing a developing hazard, the higher you score. There is a maximum score of 5 for each hazard.
To pass this section, you require at least 44 out of 75 marks.
It is important to practice this section, and there are many software packages and websites available to help, including free hazard tests here.
Booking & On The Day
You can book your theory test online, through the DSA website, at your local theory test center.
When you arrive for your test you must ensure you have the following:
•Your appointment letter
•Both parts of your valid signed UK (or Northern Ireland) driving licence
•If you have an old-style paper driving licence you must bring both your paper licence and a valid passport. |
Learning The Questions
There are many books and cd's out there that can help you with your training but there is nothing better than real life training. During your driving lessons your instructor will point out hazards that occur in everyday driving, these hazards sometimes 'develop' into a situation where you, the driver, might need to change your speed or direction, this is what is called a scoreable hazard and this is what the DSA are looking for on the theory test.
Most of our instructors should also be able to give you some mock test theory papers for you to practise with, if you need any, just ask.
If you need to 'listen' to the questions as apposed to reading them just make sure you ask when booking the test ,see our links page to do this.
